Delhi Opens Its Doors to the World: Four Showcases, One Fashion Week

Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI opens in New Delhi today. The week runs from 13 to 18 October, with the R|Elan Circular Design Challenge finale at the Embassy of France on the first day and the runway shows at Taj Palace from 14 to 18 October. Pero opens the fashion week and Amit Aggarwal's AM.IT closes it. Those are the headline names. The more interesting detail for working models is how many of the other slots come from outside Delhi.

Four places, one schedule

The programme includes FDCI x Moscow Fashion Week, with the Russian designer Sergey Sysoev. It includes Eccellenza, an Italian artisan showcase presented by the Italian Trade Agency with Confartigianato and FDCI. And it includes The Fifth Season, a fashion story from Ladakh presented by the Union Territory's Department of Industries and Commerce. Add the French embassy finale and a design challenge run with the UN in India, and the calendar reads less like a Delhi trade fair and more like a small international exchange.

Manish Malhotra also returns to the event after three years with a luxury pret collection for the festive season. The prime-time slots go to names such as Tarun Tahiliani, Suneet Varma, Namrata Joshipura, Ashish N Soni and Samant Chauhan.

What a mixed schedule asks of a model

A single-designer week asks a model to learn one silhouette and one mood. A week like this one asks for range. Italian craft houses, Himalayan textile traditions and a Moscow label do not share a visual grammar, and the people walking for them will be asked to move differently from one show to the next. Heavy handwoven wool carries itself differently from a structured festive pret piece. A designer showing outside their home market often has less time on the ground, so fittings can be shorter and more exacting, and a model who arrives prepared saves everyone minutes.

The runway used to reward one strong walk. A schedule like this one rewards three, and the ability to switch between them in an afternoon.

That is a practical point, not a poetic one. Models who can read a designer's references quickly, take direction in more than one working style and stay calm in a crowded backstage are the ones who get asked back for the second show on the same day.

The circular design thread

The R|Elan challenge, run in partnership with the UN in India, drew more than 220 applications from around the world for this edition. Circular design, meaning clothes made to be reused, repaired or recycled, is not a side topic for models. It changes what gets shown and how often a garment is handled. Pieces built from reclaimed material can be fragile or unusually structured, and the fitting room becomes slower and more careful. Models who understand why the garment exists make better presenters of it.

The festive season sets the commercial tone

Delhi in October sits directly before the wedding and festive months, and the shows are built around that. Buyers use the FDCI Showroom to meet designers directly, and the Stockroom sells select pieces. The clothes that sell are the clothes that photograph and move well, which is why runway work in this week often turns into lookbook and e-commerce bookings in the months after. The runway is the audition. The catalogue is the long contract.

For anyone starting out

If you are early in your career, you do not need to be at Taj Palace to learn from this week. Watch the shows when they stream, and pay attention to the walk, not the clothes. Notice how the pace changes between a craft collection and a pret one, how models use their hands, where they look at the turn. Then compare that against your own portfolio and ask whether it shows range or just one good look. A strong portfolio usually includes a quiet, clean frame, a movement frame and something with texture or character.

You can meet the models we represent on our models page, and read more about how Indian runway seasons shape careers in the Insider journal.

India's fashion calendar is becoming a place where other countries show up to be seen. The models who prepare for that, with range, language and patience, will find the doors opening wider each season.
